CALDWELL HALL

SPD Contracting, Inc. provided pre-construction services during the design phases of this project, as well as assisted with the renovation and maintenance of the Catholic University of America’s Caldwell Hall. The project included numerous upgrades to all of the building’s major systems in order to modernize the facility and ensure that it met current building codes and ADA accessibility guidelines. As well as, the replacement of doors and windows in the building’s dormitory and administrative offices which facilitated fire life safety and energy efficiency. All of the jobs within the scope had to be completed without damaging any areas that were deemed acceptable to remain. The success of this part of the scope was accomplished through various methods applied during the prototype mockup phase of the project, during which we created several contingency plans in case any unforeseen circumstances arose during the construction phase.

Caldwell Hall is the oldest building on campus; it was dedicated by Cardinal John Gibbons, the Archbishop of Baltimore and former President of the United States Grover Cleveland on May 24, 1888. Due to the complex and delicate nature of this historical building’s make-up,  SPD had to exert particular caution in all aspects of scope, including demolition, the construction of temporary barriers, repairs, and the renovation of the existing elements to remain. The age of the building continually presented challenges during the reparation phases as we worked to renovate the areas that were deemed existing to remain because of the unknown contents of the building’s substrates; however, despite these various and constant challenges, both Caldwell Hall’s substantial completion date and budget remained unaffected.
